Tips
Quick Tips for Working with Contractors edge
  • Get contractor recommendations from friends or family who have had similar projects done. Take a look at prior projects to inspect the quality of the work.
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau or your local or state consumer affairs office to see if any complaints have been filed against the contractor.
  • Contact at least three different contractors to compare their services. Be sure to get written estimates based on the same specifications.
  • Ask the contractor for copies of current licenses and insurance certificates. Avoid hiring a contractor who can’t provide current copies of this documentation.
  • Confirm in writing what work is being done, where the work is being done, the start date and completion date and what it will cost. Get all guarantees, warranties and promises in writing.
  • Never pay the entire cost of the job upfront. A deposit of one-third is standard, with additional payments as the work progresses. Make payments during the project contingent on the completion of specific tasks. Make the final payment only after you're satisfied with the job. You may wish to employ the services of an escrow company that will distribute funds to the contractor as needed.
