Moving to Your New Home

Homeowner ChecklistCongratulations on becoming a new homeowner! You have achieved a major milestone. There are a few additional steps you can take to make your move to home ownership a smooth one. As you plan your moving day, use the following checklist to stay organized:

Budget for moving expenses. This includes paying for movers, gas, rental equipment (if needed), packing materials, and lodging (if traveling far.)
If you plan to use a mover, choose a reputable mover and check their agreements carefully. Get a few estimates, as the costs can vary widely. Check out which works better for you, an hourly rate or a flat fee. If you will move yourself, get costs from at least two truck rental companies and obtain packing materials.
Check into insurance. Determine whether your insurance company will cover your possessions during transit.
Contact your utility companies and schedule disconnects at your old home and connects at your new one. To make sure you have no disruption of essential services, plan for the disconnects to occur the day after you leave your old place and the connects to occur the day before you arrive at the new one. Utility companies may require a deposit for new accounts.
Keep important documents or phone numbers separate from your packed belongings. You may need access to them before you have fully unpacked.
Prepare contact lists of important numbers to call, such as police, fire, ambulance, utility companies, schools, childcare, etc.
Gather and label personal and family records, including: medical and dental; veterinary and school records; legal and financial documents; birth certificates; passports; and insurance documents.
Consider making home improvements or painting before you move in. If there are significant changes you already know you’d like to make and time to do so before you have to move, it can be much easier to get this work done before you move in all of your belongings.

Security First

Change Old Locks and Security CodesAs soon as your new home is officially yours, change all the door locks and get new keys made. You don’t know who else had copies of the old keys. If there is a security system, contact the security company and change your codes. Consider any other steps you may need to take to protect your home from those who might previously have had access.

Security SystemAlso determine what other security measures you might want to take and have them taken care of before moving in. For example, if there is NOT a security system, do you want to have one installed? If so, talk to a reputable security professional and choose one that is right for you.
