My father taught me that life would have its ups and downs. You just have to keep going and not give up. He was right. In the construction industry you can be working on contract for half a year, but there’s no guarantee that six months later you’ll have anything in the pipeline.

What I never counted on was my youngest son getting sick during one of those down times. The good news was that his illness was treatable, and I had plenty of time to take him to doctors and for treatments. But I also had no income, and we had to use all our savings and max out our credit cards to cover what the insurance wouldn’t. Linda and I didn’t think we would ever get out of debt.
