The counseling agency worked with us at every step of the way. They helped us apply for a special program that gave down payment assistance from the county. We were able to get several thousand dollars applied toward our down payment and closing costs, which we won’t have to pay back until we sell the house. Just as important, they referred us to a lender who offered us a subsidized mortgage revenue bond loan. A bond loan works just like a regular 30-year fixed rate home loan, except it’s provided by a housing financing agency at below-market interest rates and designed primarily for first-time homebuyers in low-to-middle income areas. The counseling agency even gave us advice on choosing the right homeowner’s insurance.
Once we knew where we were looking and what we could afford, we took our time and looked at several homes to make sure we found the best house for our family and our budget. We bought a 1960s brick ranch-style home on a quarter acre lot. There’s a full garage for my workshop. We’ve got apricot trees, almond trees, and fig trees, and Linda is always growing something new in her garden. Kevan, my oldest, loves shooting hoops in the driveway. I wish I could get Michelle outside, but at age 13 she just wants to be at the mall! More >
